Role and Responsibilities

The Laboratory Manager will write laboratory policies and procedures, as well as evaluate and validate new equipment. Laboratory Manager will focus on quality assurance and performance improvement programs while reporting to the CEO. The Manager of Laboratory will be responsible for all issues related to the laboratory including staff scheduling, work assignments, supervision of daily lab operations, managing supplies/materials and personal maintenance of critical laboratory records. The Laboratory Manager, who works in close relation with the Laboratory Medical Director, will ensure accreditation and compliance requirements for all lab operations.

  • Provide day-to-day supervision of moderate/high complexity testing performed by qualified testing personnel to maintain consistent turn-around-times
  • Spend approximately 10% of time on the bench performing clinical testing, QC, training, etc.
  • Coordinate new employee orientation and be actively involved in training of all testing personnel as well as continued competency assessment and documentation
  • Perform annual personnel reviews for direct reports as well as periodic check-ins with team
  • Be proficient in the laboratory’s Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for clinical testing and knowledgeable in their quality control parameters.
  • Monitor specimen and testing analytics to ensure that acceptable levels of test performance are maintained
  • Review of all testing results ensuring that patient test results are not reported until any necessary corrective actions have been taken
  • Prepare for ongoing regulatory inspections and aid in any necessary responses or changes in response to audits
  • Coordinate and assist in verification and validation of tests and changes to current assays
  • Scheduling of laboratory personnel to cover both production and development needs
  • Accountable for patient/provider satisfaction
  • Monitor POCT in ancillary and off campus departments.
  • Establish and monitor strategic goals annually and ongoing.
  • Facilitate communications by attending monthly department head meetings, daily manager’s huddles, weekly staff huddles, and others as needed.
  • Develop and monitor laboratory budget with the assistance from accounting and CFO.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

  • Graduate of a baccalaureate program in Medical Technology with certification through a nationally recognized organization (ASCP and/or AMT)
  • Leadership in a Lab: 2 years
  • Qualified as a General Supervisor for High Complexity Laboratory under 42 CFR 493.1461 Standard code of Federal Regulations (Minimum)
  • Candidate must have Washington MA-P (Phlebotomist license). This can be acquired during onboarding if necessary.
  • Experience as a Medical Technologist Minimum two (2) years. Ability to function as bench tech generalist to cover absences and short staffing for all areas of the laboratory, to include weekend and evening shifts as needed.
  • Essential leadership, communication, education, collaboration and counseling skills
  • Critical thinking and strong oral/written communication with patients and providers.
  • Effective organizational skills and ability to maintain accurate notes and records.

Preferred Skills

  • Leadership in a Lab: 2 years
  • Previous experience with health IT systems and data reports preferred.
  • Proficient computer skills and experience working in Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Previous experience with Harvest Orchard LIS.
